As speculated on our last Bow Down To Us: The Lore Edition podcast, Star Trek Online may be going F2P (free to play) very soon. The decision to change the pay structure for STO hinges on the success of the recently announced change with Champions Online which will be adopting a F2P model.
“We’re not sold one way or the other with Star Trek yet. If people want Star Trek to go free-to-play then get in and play Champions and help make it a great success, because that would send a strong message. If we did Turbine’s level of success that would certainly merit the discussion!” said Jack Emmert in an interview with Eurogamer. He added, “There are more people than just I on that decision and I can’t begin to say it would be an automatic ‘Yes, we’d do it.’”
Now that we’ve seen the matrix for Champions Online’s F2P model, in terms of what will be available for paying versus non-paying customers, we can speculate what that would mean for STO.
I would hazard a guess that the biggest hits would be to character slots, storage space and available outfits for your crew. I would also guess that your crew would take a hit. In fact that’s almost a certainty. Whether they take some members away or simply limit the abilities of the crew, that’s up in the air… but knowing Cryptic, they would want to cash in on this and offer crew buffs at a cost.
However that’s all speculation for the time being.

VGAs Recap
