For the three people still playing Final Fantasy XIV, fear not, Square Enix has heard your pleas and is prepping to ease some of your MMO sorrows.
You can check out the full list of incoming changes here; from quests, combat, items and UI “improvements”.
All of the additions and changes mentioned above are currently in the final stages of development, and we are optimistic that they will be implemented in the version updates of November, December, and early 2011. Beyond those listed here, there are still numerous other features being planned. More information on these will be released in the future as details become available.
While there is nothing we would like more than to address every individual issue raised by the community, the upcoming version updates will be centered on resolving the problems and shortcomings within the three categories outlined above. We apologize if there is an aspect of the game not mentioned here, and assure you that we will be working to make as many refinements and improvements as possible.
We hope that you continue to enjoy your time in Eorzea, and promise that things will only be getting better!

FINAL FANTASY XIV Development Team
The question is though, after only a couple months, is it too late. Unfortunately, MMOs releasing prior to completion is becoming all too common place. However what hasn’t changed is the importance of hitting that gate running, because gamers don’t often have the patience to hold out as developers bug-fix their way through the first few weeks of a game’s release.
There’s always another shiny new game on the horizon, begging us to try it. Unless an IP is exceptionally powerful, you can’t fuck up the first few months of a game’s release… especially if you’re expecting gamers to pay a regular month fee to play this bug-infested, pain in the ass game.
Let’s face it, the MMO isn’t a new genre anymore. It would be inexcusable for a developer/publisher to release a half finished FPS or racing game but “promise” it will be fixed in the future. The same should go for MMO’s. The technology needed to get servers up and running, the amount of work it takes to get an MMO up and running isn’t new ground anymore. If developers aren’t willing to invest the time and money it takes to develop a polished product and set up the required amount of servers needed to handle the capacity at launch, then it is best they don’t waste their time, and our time, with a sub-par product.
While I’m not arguing with you, that opinion would hold a lot more water were it not for the fact that Black Ops just broke records for sales and it had some serious issues on the PC side.
A FPS out the gate too early, loaded with bugs, and it made a boatload of money.
What message does that send developers?
Touche on that one, but imagine if that game didn’t have the “Call of Duty” label.
I guess the message of that story is to ride the coat tails of a superior studio’s game.
